ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition)
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is a surveillance method which uses optical character recognition software on images in order to read licence plates on vehicles.
Also known as License Plate Recognition (LPR), it is a camera-based system that enables cars to be tracked and documented in real-time. So for instance, it can be used to calculate the time someone has spent in a car park or for identifying crime at petrol stations. It is also a valuable application when used in covert counter-terrorism surveillance of ports and airports.
ANPR can be used in conjunction with existing closed-circuit television or road-rule enforcement cameras. They are also used by various police forces in numerous applications, for example, as a method of electronic toll collection or for monitoring traffic behaviour at traffic lights.
The diagram below illustrates how ANPR can be utilised in an access control application.
First, the camera captures the image of the licence plate and the optical character recognition software reads the licence number. The data is then checked against a database in order to establish whether the vehicle is authorised to gain entry and instructs the barrier accordingly.
