The right PPC for your application;

Panel PC’s are be designed with many different configurations to suit practically any application. A wide choice of CPU speed and architecture allow for a standard operating system such as Windows XP & XP Embedded or Linux using a x86 Architecture and Windows CE, Windows Mobile 6 and even bespoke real-time operating systems using RISC based architecture. These two architectures alone have unique and distinct advantages.

The x86 architecture offers high performance 32 and 64bit processing that supports a vast number of operating systems and software solutions this allows for smooth roll out and low development cost. x86 solutions also have a large hardware compatibility list. Be aware however x86 solutions can have a high overall cost per unit, as software licenses and hardware expansion cards can soon add up.

The RISC architecture (reduced instruction set computer) can be 8, 16, 32 or 64bit and utilises a small, highly-optimized set of instructions, rather than a more specialized set often found in other types of system. While development for this architecture can be lengthy, the rewards in both performance, reliability and power requirements are repaid in full if production volumes are high.

The power consumption of an x86 based unit is considerably higher then a RISC based solution. If you are running a large number of units, although initial costs maybe a little higher the yearly running costs of the systems could save you money in the long run as well as reducing you companies Carbon Footprint.
